王敬涛外语
The cunning and sinister warlordDong Zhuo forced intoLuoyang with his army, controlling the young emperor and oppressing the people.Owing to his cruelty, the high officials smoldered with anger but didn’t dare to protest.
One day, vice-premier Wang Lang had a birthday party, calling lots of officials together to his mansion. When toasted, he suddenly began to whimper. The officials were all surprised and wondered why.
“Sogreat our dynasty had beenbefore You-Know-Who came,” he sighed. “But our fate is in his charge now. How pathetic and useless we are!”
Hearing this, the officials felt sad and began to cry as well, which lasted a long moment. The mansion got laden with grief. No one stopped crying except a young man, who abruptly started to laugh loudly.
The young man was Cao Cao.
“Our country is in such a mess, how can you laugh out?” Wang told him off.
“I wonder,” Cao smiled a scornful smile, “if Dong Zhuo can be killed by your tears?”
Wang was surprised and invited him to his private study, asking him how to get rid of Dong.
“I am not talented,” said Cao Cao. “But if you can lend me your treasured knife, I promise to return his head to you. I have earned his trust these days and I can get close to him.”
Beside himself with joy, Wang Lang lent his knife to Cao Cao, who rode to Dong’s mansion immediately.
“Why did youarriveso late today?” Dong asked, seeing Cao Cao come in.
“I Set off early, but the horse is too weak.”Cao answered, pointing out of the door.
“I have a lot of good horses,” Dong wanted to use Cao as his trusted follower so he was beinggenerous. He gestured for his adopted son Lv Bu, a brave androbustman, to go picking a fleet horse.
“The conspirator is destined to be killed.” Cao thought.
They talked about the present political situation. Dong couldn’t bear sitting too long because he was fat. He lay down on the bed, facing the wall, where there was a mirror, which Cao didn’t notice.
He supposed it was time to act. Stealthily, he pulled the knife out of his sheath.
But Dong glimpsed what Cao'sreflectiondid in the mirror. Dong became alert and got up immediately.
“What are you up to?” he asked, astonished.
If they were one-to-one, Cao Cao still wanted to kill him though Dong Zhuo was strong. At the very moment, Lv Bu had come back to the doorway with the picked horse.
Cao didn’t feel like losing his life in vain.He quickly knelt down on one knee, both hands holding the knifeabove his shoulders.
“I have got a treasured knifeto offer you.” he said.
Dong caught the knife and peered at it vacantly. It was a treasured knife.Indeed.But he accepted it reluctantly.
Cao felthe was being in great danger. He thanked Dong for the horse and pretended to have a try at riding it. Trotting the horse out of the mansion, he speeded up by hitting it. He knew Dong would guess his true motive, so he went hurtling out of the city instead of going to his dwelling.
Lv Bu became suspicious of Cao Cao’s behavior.
“It seemed that Cao Cao wanted to kill you.” he said to Dong Zhuo.
Dong suspected it, too. One of his advisers happened to arrive. It was suggested that Cao Cao should becheckedon at once: Cao was loyal if he was in the hostel;he was notif he was out.
Dong sent four soldiersto check. It had been not long before they came back, saying that Cao Cao had fled. Dong got extremely angry andordered hissubordinates to pursue Cao Cao.
