It waspitch dark in the forest.
"Myfather'ssworn brotherLvBoshelives here,"Cao Cao said toChen Gong, pointing
into the forest. "Let's stay the nightat his home."
They rode to Lv Boshe'smanor and were warmly welcomedby the host.
"It is said that you have been caught. How wereyou able to escape from their evil clutches?" Lv Bosheasked Cao Cao.
"Thanks to this gentleman," Cao Cao introducedChen Gong toLv Boshe.
"Thank you very much!"Lv Boshe bowed low toChen Gong. "My sworn nephewwould have died without your help."
ChenGongbowed back. Talking excitedlyfor half an hour, theybegan to feelhungry and thirsty. Lvwent to buyalcohol because he hadn'tseenCao Caofor too long.
Cao Cao and ChenGong waited for anotherhalf anhour,Lv Boshe hadn't come back yet. Suddenly they heard knives being ground.Glancing at each other, they stood up quickly, becomingfully alert.
"Lv Boshe isnot myrelative, maybe he wants to help the evil government tocatch me," Cao Caomurmured to Chen Gong. "Let's listen."
Prowling nearer the window, theyheard a voicesaying, "Let's tie and kill, shallwe?"
There was no doubt:Lv Boshe went to snitch on him to the government, it was only an excuse to buy alcohol. The family wasplottingtokill. His blood was up.
Pulling hissword out ofthesheath, Cao Cao rushed out. He killed whoever hesaw. One by one. But in the end, after killing eight of them--he sawa pig was tied in thepigpen.
Not until then did he realizehe mistook the family'sintention. Theywanted to give him a big dinner.ChenGong saw the pig, too.
"You are too suspicious," Chen Gong blamed him angrily. "The innocent people wereslaughtered in vain."
But he couldn't blamemore, becauseLv Boshe was back at any moment. They hurried away.Several minutes later, on the way outof the forest, theymet Lv Boshe, whowas riding a donkey,a flaming torchin hishand.
"Whyare you so hasty?"Lv asked themin surprise, two bottlesof alcohol in his arms.
"I'm being searched.Itwill getyou into trouble ifIstay long." Cao Cao answeredcalmly.
"One night will make no difference,"Lv enlightened them enthusiastically. "I haveapig slaughtered. Stay the night, please."
Cao didn't listen to him and went on.LvBoshe wanted to stop them butcouldn'tcatch up.
Having movedseveral steps, CaoCao seemedto have thoughtofsomething. Heturned back and rodetowards Lv. He pointed in the directionbehindLv.
"Who's that coming?" he asked in a false surprise.
Lv turned to lookover his shoulder, unawarethatCaowas stealthily pullingouthis sword.
Before herealised what was happening, Cao Cao had fiercely stabbedLv in thechest. Lv fell off the donkey anddied.
Chen Gong was astonished.
"A moment agoyou killedby mistake, but nowfor what?"
"If he would gohome and seehis family all dead,"Cao Cao answered, "He wouldtake revenge bypursuingus with his villagers."
"You knewhe wasgoodbutyou still killed him,"said Chen Gong. "Thatwas absolutelyimproper."
Hearing what hesaid,Cao Cao thought for a long minute.
"I would rather betraythe people," he said sadly, "thanbe betrayed by the people."
Chen Gongkept silent.
Having runaway several kilometres, they put upatan innfor the night. Cao Cao went tosleep early. But ChenGong didn't.
"I thought Cao Cao was a good man,"Chen Gongmurmured to himself. "Never expectedhe wasso malicious. It's betterto go than to follow him."
He left alonebeforedawn.
