Twelve films to watch at Cannes

Ismael's Ghosts

In the year that Cannes celebrates its 70th anniversary it's fitting that the opening film – Arnaud Desplechin's Les Fantômes d'Ismaël (Ismael's Ghosts) – is a more-French-than-French affair. The Gallic auteur is a firm friend of the festival, with several of his previous films, including Ma Vie Sexuelle, La Sentinelle, and Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian debuting in competition. Mathieu Amalric heads up an ensemble of French acting royalty that includes Marion Cotillard, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Louis Garrel. Amalric plays Ismael, a film-maker whose life with Sylvia (Gainsbourg) is interrupted when his lost love Carlotta (Cotillard) returns from the dead.

Flesh and Sand

Alejandro González Iñárritu has established himself as one of the great technicians of contemporary cinema, so it makes sense he would be the first mainstream director to turn to virtual reality. Developed over four years, Carne y Arena (Flesh and Sand) is a six-minute 360-degree installation designed for solo viewing that follows a group of migrants from Mexico into the US and shows, with visceral "you-are-there" flourish, the hardships these immigrants endure even without Donald Trump's border wall in place. It's the first VR work to appear at Cannes.

Jeannette: The childhood of Joan of Arc
《童女贞德》
French director Bruno Dumont explores Joan of Arc's spiritual and patriotic awakening as a child in this musical film based on Charles Péguy's 1910 poem The Mystery of the Charity of Joan of Arc, which looked at the visions that inspired her to join the fight against the English during the Hundred Years' War. Dumont focuses on how the young girl transformed from peasant to warrior, arguing that: "Everyone knows her story in adult life and her end but I don't want to re-visit what's already been done. What hasn't been explored so much is her childhood… What interests me is how Jeannette became Joan of Arc."

The S quare

Ruben Östlund has some issues with the contemporary art scene. "In the art world," the Swedish director told Variety, "you bring everything you do into a theory level, where it loses its contact with the outside world in many ways." He should know. His new film, starring Dominic West as a US artist showing off a new installation that's supposed to encourage consideration and humanistic regard, is loosely based on his own experience. Östlund once debuted an installation where two people enter a ** space meant to symbolise a street intersection, and in that space they interact with each other following the courtesy and deference of motorists to pedestrians encouraged by traffic laws. Art should "remind us of those humanistic values," Östlund says. "I think that this is not very common in the art world."

Okja
《玉子》
Bong Joon-ho has brought dark wit, intense emotionality, and jaw-dropping twists to a series of genre mashups: the monster movie The Host, murder mystery Mother, and dystopian action thriller Snowpiercer. His latest is a Spielbergian story of a young girl, Mija, whose friendship with a massive CGI creature, named Okja, is threatened by a mysterious corporate entity that wants to spirit the beastie away.

The Beguiled

Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Colin Farrell star in this remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood revenge tale set in the deep South. Kidman is the headmistress of a girls' boarding school, who agrees to shelter a wounded Union soldier (Farrell). Oscar-winning director Sofia Coppola has shifted the original film's narrative focus from soldier to women, ramping up sexual tension in a film that's competing for the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
